Research & Resources

The Nonprofit Management & Leadership Program is a leading Canadian source of research on management issues in the nonprofit sector. Faculty members and PhD students have published books, articles and research papers on many aspects of managing nonprofit organizations (accounting, marketing, fundraising and philanthropy, board and governance, strategic planning.) Schulich faculty members have been the recipients of a number of major grants from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council to further research in the nonprofit sector.

In addition, faculty members have engaged in research partnerships with sectoral organizations such as the Canadian Center for Philanthropy, the United Way and Health Canada. The program has also sponsored research leading to the preparation of case materials on recent Canadian issues to be used in nonprofit management education at York and elsewhere.

RESEARCH UPDATE SERIES

As part of Schulich’s 40th Anniversary celebrations, the Nonprofit Management and Leadership Program has launched a “Research Update” series for alumni, students, faculty and practitioners.

2006/2007
The first research forum was held on November 20, 2006. A panel of three speakers, two from Schulich and one a visiting faculty member from the London School of Economics, discussed their recent work on governance. Details are below.

Panelists: Patricia Bradshaw, Professor
Schulich School of Business
“A Contingency Approach to Nonprofit Governance: What is the Role of Strategic Choice and Resistance?”

Sarabajaya Kumar, Professor
London School of Economics
“Governance Issues in Small Voluntary and Community Organizations: Case Studies in the U.K.”

Christopher Fredette, PhD Candidate
Schulich School of Business
“Moving to Transformational Inclusivity and Board Diversity”

The next event was held on February 19, 2007. It gave participants an opportunity to hear a well-known professor from Schulich, Brenda Zimmerman, speak about her recent book entitled Getting to Maybe. This book has been selling like hotcakes and is one of the most popular reads on the Amazon non-fiction list.
