Author, The $12 Million Stuffed Shark

Don Thompson is Senior Scholar and Nabisco Brands Professor of Marketing emeritus at the Schulich School of Business.

He is author of the 2008 book, The $12 Million Stuffed Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art, which made the London Times bestseller list and is now available in 10 languages.

Shark explores and explains the economics of the contemporary art world. The author worked with auction houses, dealers and collectors to discover the strategies that power the market to produce astronomical prices. Why would a New York investment banker pay $12 million for Damien Hirst’s decaying stuffed carcass of a shark? By what alchemy did Jackson Pollock’s drip painting No. 5 sell for $140 million? Why does a leather jacket with silver chains attached, tossed in a corner and given the title No One Ever Leaves, bring $690,000 in a Sotheby’s auction? And what happened to all this after the crash of 2008? This was, and remains, a world in which you are nobody until somebody brands you.
