Laurel Broten was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007. She was appointed Minister of Children and Youth Services and Minister Responsible for Women's Issues in October 2009. She previously served as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure.
As Minister of the environment from 2005 to 2007, Ms. Broten developed policies under one of Canada’s most comprehensive Climate Change Plans; she also introduced the Clean Water Act to better safeguard Ontario's drinking water.
Ms. Broten’s work in the area of sustainability led to a review of Ontario's current reporting standards in environmental social governance, and also allowed her to travel the province for the Green energy and Green economy Act hearings.
A tireless advocate for women and children, she has worked on progressive and relevant issues as they relate to the better protection of children, the integration of internationally trained medical doctors in Ontario, and the government’s Domestic Violence Action Plan. Before running for office, Ms. Broten maintained a successful commercial litigation practice. She earned her law degree from the University of Western Ontario and articled at the Supreme Court of Canada.
