STUDENT CLUBS AND PUBLICATIONS (Graduate and Undergraduate)



Student clubs and organizations form an important part of the student life at the Schulich School of Business. Joining clubs and activities not only provides you with an enriched educational experience but it also helps in the development of marketable leadership and management skills. Athletics

Information about various Schulich sports activities and events (soccer, basketball, squash, flag football, etc.) may be found at the GBC office. The UBC Sports Director may also be contacted for additional information.

Publications

The INSIDER (Schulich Student Newspaper)
The INSIDER is the Schulich news source for current students, alumni, faculty and staff. Through monthly editions and weekly updates, the INSIDER keeps readers informed about business news and activities at the Schulich School of Business.

Commercial Business Publications
The National Post and the Toronto Star are provided free of charge on a daily basis. Student rates are available for Business Week, Canadian Business, the Financial Times, the Globe and Mail, the Wall Street Journal and Fortune magazine. All of the above publications are available in the current periodical reading room of the Peter F. Bronfman Library in the Schulich building. Students are strongly encouraged to read the Globe and Mail, the Financial Post, or the Wall Street Journal.

Undergraduate Yearbook
Each year, a committee of students produce and sell a yearbook. Yearbook information will be available throughout the year, on the ground floor of the School.

MBA Yearbook
The staff of this organization is responsible for publishing the annual edition of the Schulich MBA yearbook. The staff is composed of second-year advisors and first-year representatives who are elected by each section to compile, edit, produce and sell the current year's edition. Elections for positions on this committee are held during the first week of class for each incoming group of students. For further information, contact Karen Lowe, GBC Communications Director.

Student Clubs and Activities

Each of these organizations solicits membership from newly admitted students during Skills Week, the first week of classes. Very often there is a nominal fee for membership, which helps to cover the costs of many of the events that each organization holds throughout the academic year. Such events include guest speakers, field trips, case competitions, wine and cheese functions and much more. The executive committee for each association is elected towards the end of every academic year for leadership in the following year.

Accounting Society
The Accounting Society provides students with professional development and networking opportunities. These opportunities include the annual accounting dinner, an industry wine & cheese, a lunch-lecture series and other social events. In addition, the Society publishes The Professional Perspective four times during the academic year.

AIESEC (Association Internationale Des Etudiants en Sciences Economiques et Commerciales)
AIESEC York is a local chapter of AIESEC International, the world’s largest non-profit, student run organization. Located in over 86 countries around the world, with a global network of over 5000 students, AIESEC’s mission is to facilitate international understanding and cooperation through international work exchanges. AIESEC-York provides its members with real-world experience in the fields of marketing, communications, budget planning, event management, and human resources development. Members get the opportunity of managing our International Traineeship Exchange Program (ITEP) and attending various regional, national and international conferences.

Arts and Media Management Club
The Arts and Media Management Club, at the Schulich School of Business, aims to complement academic study with exposure to and networking in the world of arts and media. The Bright Ideas Group provides marketing consulting services to small and medium Toronto businesses. The club is a diverse team of 25 students that includes members from the BBA, IBBA, MBA and IMBA programs at York. Through our marketing services and networking opportunities that we create, B!G encourages communication and cooperation between the academic and corporate settings.

Business Law Association (BLA)
The Business Law Association (BLA), previously known as the Undergraduate Business Law Society (UBLS), is a student-run, non-profit organization, aiming to assist and nurture students who are interested in the field of business law, and provide a medium for students to gain insight into the business law arena. Corporate Social Responsibility Society (CSRS)
Corporate Social Responsibility is transforming the business world as we know it. Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Club (EVCC)
The EVCC's goals are to educate Schulich students in the field of entrepreneurship, and to facilitate their entrepreneurial ventures. The Club achieves these goals by frequently hosting lectures led by successful entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, and by hosting networking events. It encourages attendance to hear speakers such as Schulich’s own Seymour Schulich and various other guest speakers in conjunction with other Schulich business interest clubs in the hope that your talent and drive, combined with the valuable tools and advice this club will be able to provide you, will catapult you into becoming the successful self-made MBA graduates that you know you can be.

The Insider
The INSIDER Media Group is the student club that prepares the INSIDER school newspaper, serving as a communication source for the Schulich School of Business, reaching internal and external parties alike. The team is composed of 50 volunteer students working in eight departments to publish regular monthly editions and special supplements. The INSIDER provides students with opportunities to be involved on the journalistic, business, graphics design or IS functions, and has been cited as being an extremely reliable, informative and exciting student publication.

International Business Club
With members from the Schulich MBA, iMBA and the Joint Kellogg-Schulich Executive MBA programs, the International Business Club is dedicated to supporting Schulich business graduate students who are interested in doing international business or working in multinational corporations (MNCs) by providing information that will improve their understanding in this field, and by helping identify international career opportunities.

The Latin America Business Association (LABA)
LABA aims to participate in the internationalization of Schulich by raising the level of understanding of economic needs, opportunities and issues affecting both North and South in the Americas. The organization intends to improve the quality of business interaction between the regions and to build among Schulich students and alumnae the expertise necessary to strategically integrate economic, social, and sustainability issues in the Pan-American business arena. LGBT
LGBT Schulich is a networking and social club for LGBT members of the Schulich School of Business and also serves as a support network for business students struggling with issues of coming out to colleagues, co-workers, and friends. The club’s membership is open to both BBA and MBA students, as well as faculty and staff. The vision of LGBT Schulich is to create the most LGBT positive business school in Canada, in North America, and the world.

MBA/JD Joint Program Students Association

This organization serves to represent the students enrolled in the joint MBA/JD program offered in conjunction with Osgoode Hall Law School. Over the year, the association organizes an alumni mixer, sponsors tours of selected businesses and law firms, and hosts the annual Law and Business Conference, which is open to all students, faculty members, and key industry people.

N-ROC - Natural Resources Opportunities Club
The Natural Resources Opportunities Club, or N-ROC, was created with the goal of exposing club members to the opportunities that lie in the natural resources industry here in Canada and worldwide. This club focuses on the natural resources industries from all business lenses including management, operations, finance, manufacturing, production, and marketing. Topics we look to cover include renewable and non-renewable energy resources, mining of natural resources, the business of water and agriculture, and more. Throughout the year our goal is to create events that include in-house speakers and visits to company sites. N-ROC is open to MBA, EMBA, and BBA Schulich School of Business students. Net Impact - New Leaders for Responsible Business
Net Impact is a network of emerging business leaders committed to using the power of business to create a better world. Originally founded in 1993, Net Impact has evolved into a network of over 9,000 students from over 90 student and professional chapters worldwide, committed to promoting sustainable business. The Schulich chapter of Net Impact, established in the Fall of 2002, is interdisciplinary and includes students from the School of Business, Faculty of Environmental Studies and Osgoode Law Hall, allowing a broad perspective. Net Impact provides members with the opportunity to broaden their business education through YSEC (our consulting group), Speaker Series, Sustainable Learning Series and Site visits, and much more. Open Arms Committee (International Student Liaison)
The purpose of Open Arms is to facilitate the transition of incoming BBA and MBA exchange students from their home country to Canada. The goal of the committee is to welcome incoming students, to provide a "buddy" to help exchange students adjust to their new environments, and to provide all necessary information relevant to help students settle in to Schulich.

Schulich African Business Association (SABA)
SABA is a student run organization open to all members of the Schulich Community interested in learning about business opportunities and investment climate in Africa. Schulich Consulting Club (SCC)
The Schulich Consulting Club is a quickly growing industry oriented club that strives to prepare BBA and MBA students for recruitment and ultimately a profession in consulting. Members develop the toolkit required for effectively tackling case competitions and case analysis interviews through a series of seminars and opportunities to work with firms on real-world projects. Newsletters are sent out on a regular basis to provide industry updates and to prepare members for networking with and receiving mentorship from professionals in the business. SCC is the club to join for those who are serious about securing a career in consulting, as well as for those who simply seek to learn more about the field.

The Schulich Hockey Club encourages Schulich MBA hockey players of all skill levels, regardless of age or gender to play hockey. Over the past few seasons the club entered teams of students and alumni into intramural leagues and traveled to tournaments in Michigan and London, ON.

Schulich Health Care and Biotechnology Forum
This club aims to provide members with a series of professional, educational and networking events designed to enhance their understanding of the role of business in health care and biotechnology. York Business and the Environment Group
The York Business and the Environment Club is a student run organization with the primary goal of acting as a link between the environmental industry and students. It also serves as a forum to exchange ideas on environmental issues and to provide both learning and networking opportunities to its members. York Business and the Environment hosts the Enviro-Networking Event, where professionals and students are invited to listen to presentations on themes of business and the environment. The club is open to all members of the York community.

York Entrepreneurial Society
The York Entrepreneur Society provides students with an opportunity to attend seminars lectures and workshops involving experienced members of the business community. The informative sessions provided the answers to specific and general questions relating to small businesses. Topics covered include financing, business plan review, marketing, government regulations, changing technologies, and globalization.

The York Investment Club (YIC) aims to educate members in the technical and fundamental aspects of evaluating potential stock market investments, as well as provide hands-on experience in the management of a real-money portfolio. Additional opportunities for members include attending a trip to the TSE, learning the basics of investing in specialized beginner seminars, and qualifying for an analyst position entailing the research and recommendation of investment options.

York Marketing Association
The York Marketing Association (YMA) is one of the most vibrant and well-known student-run organizations at one of the world's top business schools, the Schulich School of Business. YMA is the School's official Marketing association, offering our members the exposure and knowledge needed to enter the world of Marketing with confidence. YMA attracts more than 150 dedicated members each year, comprising of students from the undergraduate (BBA) level. In previous years, the club attracted numerous graduate (MBA) as well, which prompted to this year's decision to split YMA into two separate divisions, allowing each to cater to needs and wants of its respective members more effectively.

York Undergraduate Finance and Industry Club (YUFIC)
York University Finance & Industry Club (YUFIC)
Founded in 1995, in affiliation with the Schulich School of Business, the York University Finance & Industry Club (YUFIC) is one of Schulich's most prestigious non-profit student organizations. YUFIC has long held a tradition of developing business students into business professionals. The breadth of industry leaders and Bay Street gurus who can trace their present day success to the skills and relations they acquired during their time with the organization speaks volumes about the club's decorum and curriculum. The organization constantly strives to bridge the gap between its corporate partners and Canada's future business leaders. This mandate is achieved on two different levels: First, a focus on professional development, and second, through the instruction of technical skills prescribed by YUFIC's corporate partners.

YUFIC's year-long curriculum includes a number of milestone events, including: "The Art of Networking" information session, the annual Cocktail introducing YUFIC's wide array of sponsors, The New York Development Summit, technical workshops (including Investment Banking, Valuation and Forecasting, and Advanced Excel), corporate information sessions featuring YUFIC's sponsors, and the Imagine.
