Schulich School of Business Launches New MBA Program in India

TORONTO, ON – Friday, November 13, 2009 – The first MBA program to be delivered in India by a leading international business school from outside the country was launched in Toronto by the Schulich School of Business on Monday, November 9, 2009.

“Schulich is proud to provide one of the first truly international MBA degree programs to be offered in India,” said Schulich Dean Dezsö J. Horváth, CM. “The Schulich MBA in India offers students a unique MBA experience, including exposure to faculty and students from around the world. At the same time, it will develop expertise in two of the world’s major trading regions.”

The Schulich MBA in India is a two-year program. The first year is taught in Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, at the S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR). The second year is taught in Toronto at the Schulich School of Business. Schulich faculty will deliver the majority of the courses in Mumbai and all courses in Toronto. However, some of the courses in Mumbai will be delivered by India-based Adjunct Professors and will include local content with an India focus in some of the case studies. A partnership between Canada’s Scotiabank and India’s HDFC Bank will provide students with the benefit of a preferred loan program. Upon completion of the program, graduates receive a Schulich MBA degree.

“This evening’s gathering has been organized to share with you the latest development in our continuing commitment to bring our academic programs to a global audience and to incorporate the global dimension of management even more completely into our fabric as a School,” said Schulich Associate Dean, Academic, David Dimick during his opening remarks at the Launch.

India has one of the fastest growing economies in the world and in the next three decades, it is anticipated that the country will become the third largest economy on earth. At the Launch, Preeti Saran, Consul General of India in Toronto, outlined the importance of education in a country where 50 per cent of the population is under 25 years of age.

“To meet the developmental aspirations of our one billion people, we have to invest in quality education,” said Mrs. Saran. “Programs like the Schulich MBA in India will create opportunities for Indian students who are looking to acquire world class management training. Given the need for quality education, I am certain [this program] will attract the best and the brightest students from India and prepare them for global careers, both in India and around the world.”

The Schulich MBA in India is the newest MBA program offered in India. It received government approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the national regulatory body governing school accreditation and the delivery of degree programs. The inaugural class of the new program will begin on January 4, 2010.

Several special guests who helped facilitate the Schulich MBA in India program were acknowledged at the Launch, including faculty and staff from the School; members of the Canadian government (the High Commissioner for Canada in India, the current and former Consuls General for Canada in India); and members of the Indian government (representatives from the Ministries of Education, Higher Education, External Affairs, Human Resources and Development, as well as the Prime Minister of India’s Office).

“Getting to the actual Launch of our new program was not an overnight journey. Nor was it one we completed on our own,” said Dean Horváth. “Sincere thanks to each and every one of our supporters. We at Schulich are very excited about what we hope will be a lifelong relationship with India.”
