Academic Policies
A complete list of academic policies begins on page 83 of the Graduate Academic Handbook.
Grading Policy
The MBA, MPA and IMBA programs use a nine-point letter-grading system; the top grade is A+ and the minimum passing grade is C–. Each letter grade for a course is assigned an Index Value, and the Index Values are weighted by the credit-hour value to derive a weighted average. This weighted average is calculated on a cumulative basis, and is called the Grade Point Average (GPA). The letter grades, together with their Index Values and a general explanation are summarized in the accompanying chart.
The Schulich School of Business does not use a percentage scale. When faculty members award marks on a percentage basis, the instructor converts the percentages to letter grades. For example,
a cumulative percentage mark of 50% does not necessarily mean that a student will pass a course.
There is no prescribed conversion formula from percentages to letters.
| Letter Grade | Index | Interpretation |
| A+ | 9 | |
| A | 8 | Excellent |
| A- | 7 | |
| B+ | 6 | |
| B | 5 | Good |
| B- | 4 | |
| C+ | 3 | |
| C | 2 | Acceptable |
| C- | 1 | |
| F | 0 | Failing |
| P | 0 | Pass (Courses taken on exchange) |
- the GPA will be computed on all Schulich graduate courses taken, including failures and repeated courses. Grades received in courses for which Advanced Standing was given will not be included in calculating the GPA
- grades for all courses taken will remain on the official York University transcript
- students who fail a ‘required’ course must retake it. Students who fail an elective course may retake it, or may elect to take another course
- students may take more than the minimum number of electives and may retake courses which they have not failed
Promotion Criteria
- to maintain their standing in the program, all students must maintain a GPA of at least 4.2
- full-time students will be reviewed at the end of their first two terms or after completing 18.0 credit-hours of coursework (excluding Advanced Standing), whichever comes first
- part-time students will be reviewed after completing 12.0 credit-hours of coursework (excluding Advanced Standing)
- Post-MBA Diploma students are reviewed upon completion of 6.0 credit-hours of course work
- students who receive a grade of ‘F’ in more than 3.0 credit-hours of coursework will be debarred
- students who have obtained Advanced Standing must take at least 12.0 credit-hours of York MBA courses before their GPA is assessed with regard to promotion standards
- to retain their status as Schulich students, MBA/MPA graduates returning as special students must maintain a GPA of at least 4.4 based on all program courses taken and can fail no more than 3.0 credit-hours of coursework
Probationary Admittance and Promotion Standards
In some instances, the Schulich Admissions Committee may recommend admission for an applicant who demonstrates considerable academic or professional ability, but does not quite satisfy the normal requirements for admission. The committee makes such admissions decisions very selectively. Such applicants are admitted as probationary students and must receive a GPA of 4.2 by the end of Term 1 (full-time students) or by the end of Term 2 (part-time students). If a probationary student achieves the required GPA by the specified time, that student will become a regular student. If the required GPA is not achieved within the specified time, the student will be required to withdraw from the program enrolled in.
Graduation Requirements
- successful completion of 60.0 credit-hours of courses consisting of:
- 33.0 credit-hours of Required Foundations of Management Core Courses, and
- 27.0 credit-hours of electives
- grade point average (GPA) of at least 4.4, excluding failures
