PhD Admissions and Admissions Requirements

APPLICATION PROCESS

There are only a limited number of spaces in the program and we try and select those applicants whom we believe have the greatest chance of completing the program successfully. Students are admitted in September only. Applications are due by January 15 of the same year. We do not begin reviewing an application until it is complete, i.e., all transcripts, test scores, and reference letters are received by us. Individuals who send in a complete application by the deadline can normally expect feedback from the program by the first week of April.

If you are accepted you will receive two letters from us: one is a letter of acceptance from the Faculty of Graduate Studies; another is a letter describing the financial support package. For international students, both will be required in order to obtain your student authorization.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

i) EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
  • Normally, due to the number of applicants and qualifications of the applicants, a graduate degree at the Master's level is suggested for application. Successful applicants in the past have an MBA, an MA or an MSc in a related discipline. Exceptional candidates with a Bachelor’s degree may be considered. Masters degrees in Business (MBA’s) from South Asia may require further academic qualifications for consideration. A degree certificate will be required if the transcript does not indicate graduation or completion from a program.
  • Recommended performance level: an undergraduate GPA of a minimum of 3.0 and a graduate GPA of a minimum of 3.5.

ii) ADMISSIONS TESTS
  • GMAT or GRE: Applicants must sit for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Test scores older than five years are not acceptable. For the GRE, both the general test and the writing assessment are required. Recommended performance level on the GMAT is at least 600 and for the GRE it is at at least 1380 total of the verbal and quantitative sections only. Please note that these requirements can not be waived or substituted with professional designations such as CMA, etc.
  • English Proficiency: The PhD degree requires facility in English, as substantial amounts of reading and writing are involved. Students who have not graduated from a university where the language of instruction is English are required to demonstrate competence in the English language. Usually such students take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS. A minimum paper-based TOFEL score of 600, or computer-based TOFEL score of 250 is required. Recommended performance level is 600 on the written TOEFL, 250 on the computerized version or 100 on the new Internet-based TOEFL, while for the IELTS it is 7.0.
  • Schulich's institutional identification codes for GMAT, GRE and TOEFL are 0894.
